ESOL at Idlehurst Elementary School
ESOL Remote Learning Opportunities
Dear Students and Families,
Hello and welcome to our enhanced remote learning. We will have the chance to work together in small groups, one on one times, as well as in the classroom meetings. My hope is that we will all get in a good routine to make our new normal for our days while we are not in the school building.
I have set up a link to the ESOL Remote learning Google classroom. You can find the link on the link button and classroom code on the button on the Idlehurst ESOL page. The classroom code is da3albd.
Here are my expectations for the students I see:
Reading
Students read 20 minutes a day. This can be students reading or listening to stories. My hope is that while your student is reading they are thinking about the characters, setting (where the story is happening), the problem the characters are having and the solution (how they solve the problem) if it is a fiction book. They should be able to retell the story in the order or sequence things happen in the story. Or if it is a nonfiction book (teaching something about the world) then the student will be able to tell you some facts they learned or what they learned about in the book.
This can be done through:
Raz Kids https://www.raz-kids.com/
This is a site your student’s classroom teacher has set up a username and password for your student. It is books at their reading level. There are hundreds of books to choose from and a short quiz at the end. The more they read and do the quizzes the more points they accumulate to build a robot, spaceship and world in outer space.
Epic https://www.getepic.com/
Epic is a digital library with great books for students from kindergarten to grade 5. If your teacher did not give you a class code, let me know and I can provide you with one. Epic allows students or parents to read the books and some books the site will read to you. If you don’t have an account, you can sign up for free or use my code to get in. Go to www.getepick.com/students. Sign in with the class code cxy7892. You can use it on a laptop, Chromebook, or on a cell phone.
Storyline https://www.getepic.com/
Storyline is a website with videos of celebrities reading children’s books. It is a great way for children to hear some new or old favorite children’s books to them. It is available 24 hours a day and has hundreds of great books. Make sure to ask your child when their finished listening to tell you about the book. Maybe you can ask who the characters were and what the problem was in the story. Or maybe just ask them to retell the story.
Education.com https://www.education.com/ or the app on an tablet or phone is called Brainzy
This is an educational site I subscribe to every year. I am able to set up an account for all my students to use to play educational games as well and read. You will need to email me at [email protected] to get the code. I hope you will take advantage of this because it will be a great way for students to review skills and learn new ones in a fun engaging way. Please email me for the codes.
Share a story, picture, wish, or reading.
What would you like me to know or see? Can you send me a video of you reading a story? Maybe you can read to my dog, Bailey.
Take care and stay well.
Love,
Mrs. Francoeur
